Settings

By clicking Update settings!, a plaintext key=value cookie will be stored on your browser. When selecting a default setting, the parameter is removed from your cookies.

Safe search

Adds time range, region, and safe search controls below the category tabs.
When enabled, scrolling to the bottom of search results loads the next page automatically.
Turns each engine indicator on a result into a link to that engine's own search for the same query.
On the results page, long-press (hold) a result's domain or an engine badge to hide matching results live. A menu then lets you undo, or add the domain to your discard filters permanently. Off by default; normal clicks are unaffected.
Group consecutive results from the same domain into collapsible clusters.
When an engine reports structured facts about a result — a rating, a release year, a package version — show them in a compact row under the description.
When an engine tells us when a page was published, show it at the start of the description — recent pages read as "3 days ago", older ones as a date.
Results per page
How many results (or domain clusters) fill a page. 1–200.
Image strip size
Thumbnails shown above web results on page 1. 0 turns the strip off.
Show Archive.org, Archive.is, and Google Cache links next to each result URL.
Add a "Preview" button to media links (e.g. YouTube) in any results tab, so you can play them inline without leaving the page. Keyed off the link, not the tab. Off by default (embeds are heavier).

History & Privacy

Stored history shows up as bolded suggestions when you start typing in the search bar.

Keeps a local copy of your searches in this browser's localStorage. Uncheck to clear all local records.
Links your searches to your session so your History page follows you across devices with this cookie. Even without this, this server anonymously logs searches (for its stats) and caches results (for speed) — neither linked to you, and both opt-out-able below; turning this on just links your searches to your session so you can see them. Note: results are cached anonymously (no readable query text) unless you opt out below — that's why you may see "(cached)".
This server keeps an anonymous list of what's been searched (query + time, never tied to you) — it powers the Trending page. Uncheck to leave your searches out of it. (Enabling server history or sharing above supersedes this — a stronger grant.)
Searches enter the shared cache keyed by an unreadable hash — no query text, nothing tied to anyone — so repeats are instant for everyone. If you just want fresher results, lower Cache freshness in Advanced — even to 0 — which never serves you from the cache but still caches for others. Unchecking is meant for paranoiagenic circumstances — when even an anonymous trace is too much.
Marks results that weren't in your previous search for the same query. The comparison set is stored in this browser only — nothing is sent to the server. Requires browser or server history to be on.
Your queries contribute to the anonymous trending page. No cookie hashes or IPs are exposed.
Your searches appear with exact timestamps in the real-time feed on the trending page.
Bookmark flag button
Controls whether the bookmark flag button appears on results. Long-press on URL segments always works regardless of this setting.
Tracker detection (server-side)
Show a badge of known trackers on each result, looked up on the server against a bundled dataset (WhoTracksMe).
Show links to Hacker News discussion threads when a result URL has been submitted to HN.
Performs a server-side HEAD request on result URLs to detect dead links. Results are cached.

AI on search
AI on double-search
Search twice (or prefix with !!) for the double-search level — it always runs at least as hard as the plain-search level. Lite: AI silently decides which oracles to show. Full: the visible research agent. e.g. Lite + Full = quiet help normally, the big guns when you ask twice.
Automatically fire category-relevant oracles when searching in specific tabs (e.g. weather on Maps, radio on Music, calculator on Science, DNS/CIDR on IT).
Instant-answer shortcut
When a query is fully answered by a local oracle (a calculation, a unit conversion, a color code), show just the answer and skip the engine fanout — with a "search anyway" link. Saves a round trip to every engine.
Tab auto-oracles
Which oracles fire automatically when you search on a tab, without trigger words. "Custom" replaces every tab's default set with your picks.
Display an experimental live dot graph during speed test and benchmark oracles.
Display a breakdown of how each result was scored and ranked across engines.
When enabled, the AI research agent automatically runs in the background if you stay on the results page for 15+ seconds without clicking.
Result reranking & Goggles

Shape which results rise, sink, or disappear — independent of which engines produced them. Rerank-raise a domain to float it up; rerank-discard one to drop it from the results entirely. If you need longer or more shareable rulesets, a Goggle can be used (a standard introduced by Brave) — it can boost, downrank, or discard by site or URL pattern. Your rerankings apply on top of the Goggle: a rerank-discard always wins (the result is gone no matter what the Goggle says), and a rerank-raise stacks with any Goggle boost. (The Ranking profile picker up top is a bundled preset; these are your own hand-tuned rules.)

Local keeps your raise/discard lists and Goggle in this browser only. Server stores them under your session so they follow you across devices — still private to your cookie, evicted after 90 days of no use.

Goggle URL
A Brave-compatible Goggle (custom ranking rules: $boost/$downrank/$discard by site or URL pattern). We fetch and cache it, and unlike Brave apply it to every result type. Public Goggles from Brave's library work as-is. Hosted Goggles are re-checked about every 30 minutes — not on every search.

Engine configuration
Single engine mode
Proxy a single engine — your results come only from it. Other engines still cache in the background, but this turns off metasearch entirely (no cross-engine merging, weights, or ranking-profile reranking) for your searches.

By default the server's engine weights and selection apply. As soon as you change any setting here, you override the server defaults entirely for that category.

API keys

Some engines need an API key. Where the server has one covered for you, it's marked below and you don't need to do anything. You can still paste your own key to use instead of the server's. Your keys are stored as cookies in your browser and shown here — clear a field and save to remove that key.

Profiles & tabs (global)

Account-global: everything in this section applies no matter which profile you're editing above. Tabs are navigation; each tab can be bound to a profile that shapes its searches.

Your tabs
A tab is a label + a category + a profile. The category decides which engines answer; the profile decides how results are ranked, cached, and rendered — so "Indie" and "Academic" can both be web searches shaped differently. Custom tabs appear after the built-in ones. Changes save immediately.
Research contexts

A context is a named seen-set: while one is active (pick it on any results page), results you’ve engaged with — scrolled over, clicked, or dismissed with the ✓ button — are hidden from every later search in that context. Clear empties a context but keeps it; delete removes it entirely. Needs server-side storage.
Tab visibility
Some tabs earn their place through oracles rather than engines (Weather, Maps) — "Show every tab" keeps those visible. Individual tabs can still be hidden with the checkboxes below.

"Show" controls whether the tab appears in the tab bar. Searches on a bound tab use that profile automatically (same as "pin to tab" on a results page). "Switch words" are trailing words/phrases that hop a web search to that tab (e.g. "paris maps") — comma-separated, blank uses the defaults shown, "none" disables. Changes save immediately.

Clear my data

"Clear browser data" wipes every 4got cookie and all localStorage (settings, history, bookmarks) from this browser — local only. "Delete my server data" asks the server to remove everything linked to your cookie hash (profiles, synced history, bookmarks, likes) — it cannot touch anonymous cache entries, which were never linked to you in the first place. 4got can technically read server-stored data (it isn't end-to-end encrypted), which is exactly why storing locally is the default and server storage is opt-in.
